Week 8: Is the Class Half Empty or Half Full?

'Teepötkö' photo (c) 2009, Anssi Koskinen - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/I believe that tonight is actually the mid point of this amazing semester.  Gee, time flies when you are having so much fun, right?  Right?  Anyway, we are cruising along quite well in terms of the assignments.  I gave all of the NETS collaborative narratives a look.  If I can find some time today, I will try and give some more feedback before class.  Overall, I would say that you are all doing well.  Don't forget to give each other detailed feedback. . .it really does help.  The journal 1-5 assignment has been graded.  There were a lot of you who cited L&L as a paper journal.  The assignment requires you cite L&L as an online journal as that is how you are all accessing it.  Small fix, shouldn't take very long

Tonight we are going to go over the Excel assignment, the PLN assignment, and I will remind you again that Journals 6-10 have started.  If you are caught up on all of your work, you can probably finish the Excel assignment in class; however, you will need to BRING HEADPHONES as you will be watching a video tutorial.  If not, you will be completing the assignment at home.  There should also be some time to discuss TaskStream narratives and I can answer any questions the group has about the process or the content.  Lastly, we can revisit the Emerging Technology Checklist and maybe learn a new trick or two for your blogs!

This Week's Question: What is the last good book your read. . .it could have been for please or something assigned to you for a class?
I am using a book called A Whole New Mind by Dan Pink for my other two classes.  It is an awesome book about the need for right-brained thinking in today's Conceptual Age.

  1. the last book I read was Just one Taste. It took me forever to read just because I never have the time to just sit and do nothing. It was, like all the other books I read, a romance novel. i need to go and get a new book soon. Or read one of the others I have already read, because I do not remember how they ended!

  2. I have been reading The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. It is set in Scotland during the 1700s and is historical fiction and romance. Someone recommended my dad buy it for me since I was living in Scotland and now my whole family is addicted to the series. I love to go to bed early just to find out what is happening with Claire and Jamie :)

  3. The last really good book I read was Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld. Its the second book in the Leviathan series. :D Its about an alternate WW2 where the Allies have harnessed the ability of DNA splicing to make fabricated war animals (They're called Darwinists). The Axis have discovered steam power as well as electricity powered things to make mechanical walkers(They're called Clankers). The story focuses on a Austrian prince on the run and a girl who illegally enlisted in the British Air Force. They both meet on the Leviathan, a giant hydrogen breathing flying whale. Its really good!!

  4. The last good book I read was a series of three books actually and it was called The Hunger Games. My bought it for me because I love to read but at first glance I thought no way was it going to be a book I would like. However, I became addicted and read all three books super fast. They are now making it into a movie soon so I am very excited. I love ready love stories and my all time favorite author is Nicholas Sparks.

  5. A really good book series that I enjoyed reading was The Left Behind series.I have read all 9 of the books and enjoyed the story so much I am currently rereading them and am through to the 5th book for the second time. The books are based on dispensationalist interpretation of prophecies in the Biblical books of Revelation, Daniel, Isaiah and Ezekiel, Left Behind tells the story of the end times, in which many have been "raptured," leaving the world shattered and chaotic.
As people scramble for answers, a Romanian politician named Nicolae Jetty Carpathia rises to become secretary-general of the United Nations, promising to restore peace and stability to all nations. What most of the world does not realize is that Carpathia is actually the Antichrist foretold from the Bible. Coming to grips with the truth and becoming born-again Christians, Rayford Steele, his daughter Chloe, their pastor Bruce Barnes, and young journalist Cameron "Buck" Williams begin their quest as the Tribulation Force to help save the lost and prepare for the coming Tribulation, in which God will rain down judgment on the world for seven years.
These books are very interesting to read, and are very easy and quick to get through as the story is pretty interesting. You should check them out if you have not!

  6. The last good book I read was "The Diary of a Mad Fat Girl." I promise it is not as bad as it sounds. It is actually really funny and I have recommended it to 3 of my sisters and they loved it. If you are into Romantic Comedies, read it. I read about 10-15 books this last summer so the fact that I remembered the title of the book means that it was pretty good. I have forbade myself from pleasure reading during school semesters because I know that I will get caught up in a book and not get my homework done. I cant wait until this semester is over so I can hold my dear dear Kindle once again.

  7. The last good book I read was called Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. Its about a 9 year old boy whose father died in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. He finds a vase with a key inside and wanders around New York trying to find what the key unlocks. Not only is the story line good, as it is written from the boy's perspective. It is also visually pleasing and has a flip-book animation of someone falling from the trade center towers. It is a very touching book. Believe it or not, it was assigned for one of my English classes (Contemporary Novel - after the year 2000).

  9. I just finished reading The Help. Its an amazzzinnnng book. I recommend everyone go out there and get it. Its the type of book that you can not put down. For those of you who don't know what its about, it is set in the 50s and 60s and focuses on the lives of African American women working in the homes of prominent white families. It is about the relationships that these maids developed with the small white children and how that relationship changed over the years as society began influencing the opinions of these children. I need to see the movie soon!

  10. During the summer I read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" which is a non-fiction book about the woman behind the HeLa Cells that have been used around the world for medical research. Her cells were the ones used to create the vaccine for polio, mainly because her cells grew quickly and stayed alive longer than cells scientists had used before. The story is mainly about her family but it also really shows how African-American people were treated during that time. It was really interesting and is one of those books that you never forget.

  11. Wow, I would love to have time to read books that aren't assigned, but textbooks are beneficial too. The last novel of note that I read was The White Tiger, by Aravina Adiga. It is a great work of literature that illustrates the main character's struggle with morality as he climbs from the bottom up in India's caste system. It is a charming, witty and educational read as it includes historical and cultural insight.

  12. The book I am reading right now is Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Very deep and philosophical. In a nutshell from what I've read so far he writes about simple living and the problems with materialism in society.

  15. I don't ever read for pleasure! I'd rather wrote on math problems :) But, a series that I actually read when I was younger was "Series of Unfortunate Events". It fully grabbed my attention and I'd fall asleep reading because I wouldn't want to stop. I haven't found a book like that since then.

  16. I usually never read for pleasure because I really dont have time unless its for school. But last semester I had to take a Lit. class and had to read "I love yous are for white people", by Lac Su! For me to like a book I really have to be engaged by it and really like. If not it takes me forever to finish. But with this book I fell in love with it I read the whole thing in two days and really never put it down. Lac really did a great job with keeping your interest and really wanting to turn every page. I recommend this book to everyone, if you have time I would definitely pick this book up and read it:)

  18. The last book I read was "The Catcher in the Rye" loved it. Normally I do not read for pleasure, but at that time I lived with an English major and she always had books laying around. The next book I think that I actually read is, "Jane Eyre". I have never read it, and I think I would like too.

  19. The last good book I read was called "Handle With Care" by Jodi Picoult. I love everything by her. She is from a small town in New Hampshire, near where my mom is from so it is cool to read her books and recognize some of the areas she mentions. She has tons of books so I always have a new one to go to when I finish :)
