Week 1: Welcome to Ed422!

Welcome to another awesome semester of EDUC 422. . .Technology Tools for Education. By the end of this course you will learn a lot about how to integrate technology into your classroom, as well as a few tricks and tips for how to ramp-up your so-called digital life ;-)

I will use this blog to keep everyone updated on the weekly requirements for the course, as well as model for you how to create a blog for your future classroom!  I need you to read each entry carefully, as I will be giving away $50 a week to the person who finds the hidden gnome in this very post. . .Okay, not really, but I need everyone to read each entry ;-)

Technical Issues:
First order of business:  If you do not have a Gmail Address/Account, you need to get one!  (and no, your CSUSM email does not count).  Don't worry, I have worked it out with Google to give you free email accounts!
You will be asked to join and/or participate in a number of web-based tools, software, etc. . .I recommend that you find a user name that identifies you, is appropriate for school/parents, and one that you can remember. . .
While this course has no required text, you will be required to subscribe to ISTE, the International Society for Technology in Education (see link on this blog), as well as purchase a subscription to TaskStream, an online portfolio generator.
For TaskStream (also linked on this blog): You will need to self-enroll in the Local TPE.
Here are the code you will need:
                                               Local TPE: 6SG3BA

I will also ask you weekly questions on this blog that you will need to answer. Some are related to education and most are related you your lives. . .It allows me to build community while ensuring that you are reading the weekly posts!

This Week's Question:
What is your current favorite piece of technology and why? (currently, I think I would have to say my iPad. . .although my quest to beat Angry Birds is almost becoming an obsession)

  1. My current favorite piece of technology would have to be my iphone. As a student among other things I am always on the go. I need technology and I need it to be accessible! Having internet, email, social networks, news sources, texting, telephone communication all-in-one is something that is essential to me. When I am in a bind and need to access internet, or email something immediately, I like to know that I can do so from wherever I am (even without WiFi).

  2. Definitely my iPhone! Now that I have it I cannot imagine life without it!! My favorite feature is the camera. I love photography and so being able to have a decently hi-res camera with me ALL the time is awesome! All the extra apps don't hurt either!

  3. I agree my favorite current piece of technology that I own is currently my iPhone! It is my baby and i have owned 4, the first three were stolen and my forth is currently shattered:-( But good news everybody the iPhone 5 should be released and available soon, rumor is that it should be for sale on September 7th, 2011... Has anyone heard anything different. Personally I can not wait to get mine! I am also in the market for an iPad, yes Mac/Appple is so awesome!

  5. I love my Droid. I always have internet and I can access my email and that's extremely important. I love waiting now, because I'm never bored. I have Facebook, a million free apps and internet. I even bought a pair of shoes while waiting for a movie to start!

  6. My single favorite peace of technology is my Android Cell. I don't need to rely on WiFi or carry around my lap top I can basically do everything except watch movies (which I don't really like anyway). I can read, write, keep up with friends, listen to music, surf the web, and do homework.

  7. My current favorite piece of technology would have to be my Android phone. My phone and I have a love/hate relationship. Most of the time it drives me crazy but in reality I'm lost if I ever leave it at home or loose it. I feel completely lost without my social networks, texting, internet, or having the ability to get ahold of someone with the touch of a finger. Lets be honest here...I have an addiction.

  8. My favorite piece of technology is my android. (hoping to get an iphone5 soon...)I love smartphones because you can access anything and be anywhere. I can't wait to see what technology has to offer 20 years from now... :-)

  9. My favorite piece of technology would be my cell phone, Droid, because of the app Carr Matey. See on Monday was my first day of school at Cal State and I thought my car was stolen because I could not find it in the parking lot. After the campus police drove me to my car's actual location I realized I had to do something about remembering my car's location. And so, I was directed to this application. Ever since I have cherished my cell and its application market, it's an embarrassment saver!:)

  10. While I love my iPhone and could not live without a cell phone, I think I love my Macbook more. I could live off of my Macbook and In-N-Out gift cards. Coming from a lifetime of miserable PCness, the ease and comfort of using my Mac makes me want to put my whole life on there. All of my school assignments and appointments in iCal, all 4,000 of my song in iTunes, all of my favorite websites on my bookmark bar in Safari. I just learned about Spaces, and I am so excited to use it. I know it sounds like I have a love affair with my Mac, but that's kind of how it feels. Woo!

  11. I would have to say my laptop. My laptop currently contains my entire technological life. I tragically lost my desktop from old age, so I do everything on my laptop at the moment. It contains my internet, Word documents, music, pictures, StarCraft II and Minecraft. I even order shirts on it! I don't have an urge to be online all the time, so I don't mind the fact I might not be able to connect at times. And it has a really neat signature on the top right now. :)

  12. My brother got the iphone and i loved it! It was so neat being able to get on the internet and not have to turn on a comp. Easy! I like easy :)

  13. I must confess than I'm not a huge technology fan, but I cannot live without my cell-phone to access internet or be in touch with family and friends.

  14. My current favorite piece of technology is the iphone as well. I find it very easy to use and with all the features that it has I can't think of anything I can't do. I recently dowloaded the CoX app and now I can record my shows anywhere!! :)

  15. My favorite piece of technology would be my cell phone. I don't have a droid or the Iphone but I have a smart phone from sprint and it has everything I would ever need. Being able to use gps, communicate in multiple ways, and have an easy to use camera/video camera in my pocket is amazing to me. I love everything about it

  16. My favorite piece of technology has to be my ipod touch. I get addicted to time wasting games and organization apps. Although my obsession its making me want to buy an iphone and I can't afford it at the moment.

  17. I believe that my favorite piece of technology would have to be the iphone. The thing is that I don't actually have an iphone, nor have I ever owned one. My husband has one and it is his "mistress" he's on it all the time. The greatest part is that he can be anywhere and he has access to the world wide web. Also depending if there is or isn't internet connection, it can also be a camera/video/music player. All in one. The apps are an amazing to me as well. I'm jealous, but just don't want to pay the extra money, considering that I have no extra money. I am paying for my tuition. Financial aid has not come through yet...of course.

  18. I think my favorite piece of technology would be my LG xenon that I purchased on ebay a few years back. It is a "slider" phone which makes it pretty fun to use even when I'm not actually using it. (It USED to be really cool which kind of makes it still really cool) I like it because it has very basic capabilities (like making phone calls) that keeps me from getting distracted while at work and school.. plus its pretty much the only form of technology that I have besides a computer haha

  20. I would have to say my blackberry - I enjoy being able to access everything in my life through my phone. My finance has an iphone and I often steal his to play games :). In general I would have to say any of the new phone technologies really amaze me.

  21. My favorite piece of technology would have to be my cell phone. It is very basic and only has text and phone calls but it works great for me. Eventually I will need to get a phone that is more technological advanced but for now this works for me!!

  22. My favorite piece of technology is my iPad. I love being able to read ebooks and my eTextbooks for school. When I first went to college 20 years ago I had to lug a huge bag of books to class. Now I can just carry my iPad! I am also a big Words With Friends player and I love all the apps available.

  23. If you had asked me this question last semester, my response would have been much different. I would have said my digital camera because it allowed me to capture and preserve my memories of breathtaking moments. However, this was when I had a dumb phone and had to hike to the campus library for lack of a home computer. It is now 2011, and I am finally catching up after being technologically displaced for the past decade. Having a MacBook has changed my life, and I am so excited to be in this class to learn how to use it!

  25. My name is Ali Jensen. I am 21 years old. I have 2 other siblings, an older sister and a younger brother. My family lives in Encinitas and I live in San Marcos.

In kindergarden, I went to an elementary school called Olivenhein Pioneer in Encinitas. I went there until 4th grade, and then got switched to a newer school called El Camino Creek Elementary because of the development I lived in. In middle school, 7th and 8th grade, I went to Diegueno, also in Encinitas. In high school, I went to San Dieguito Academy. I graduated in 2008 and went to Mira Costa College until Spring 2011 and transferred to CSUSM Fall of 2011.

I think I am average at working on computers. I know the basics in mot windows programs. I am below average with mac computers though. I usually get very confused while working on them. I like computers to an extent, I cannot spend too long on them or I get impatient.

The mission statement mentions student-centered education. My main reason for deciding to go to CSUSM was their option of the Integrated Credential Program (ICP). The idea that they teach subject material at the same time as how to teach the subject material, it seems that it is twice as effective, which I think benefits the students extremely, creating a student-centered education.
